Engagement rings throughout History

There have been different engagement rings throughout history. Further, different cultures and countries have followed different wedding ring traditions all through these years. The Egyptians believed the third finger followed the vena amoris-the vein of love and therefore they wore the engagement ring in the third finger. The Jews, on the contrary, wear the engagement ring in their index finger instead of ring finger.

The Egyptians wore the engagement ring in their left hand because they believed that the heart was on the left side of the chest. But in many countries, including Norway, Spain, Russia, and Germany, the wedding ring is worn on the right finger instead of left.

In the Middle East, men used to give their partners puzzle rings. It is a complex piece of jewelry with several rings. Legends have it that men used to give puzzle rings to prevent their women from cheating upon them. If the woman decided to be unfaithful she would have to remove the ring and it would fall apart in her hands. If the groom found it, he would get to know that his wife was cheating upon him.

In the early colonial American era, the trend of giving Thimbles to the brides started. Women used to remove the top of their thimbles to make them into a band. In the late 16th and 17th century France and England, poesy rings gained a lot of popularity. These wedding ring bands that were made out of sterling silver used to be inscribed with sentiments of love, hope, and faith.

Wedding band trends for men

Men are not a regular jewellery-wearer, so finding something for them becomes a tough job. When bride and groom exchange vows, they wear wedding bands as a symbol of their never ending love. Since women love jewellery they can easily find the one of their choice. Men need to consider their personal style before selecting a wedding band for their D-day because it will be worn for the rest of their life. Here a few wedding band styles for grooms with different personalities:

  • For a conservative groom

A plain, flat gold (or metal) band is the logical choice for "conservative" men. Gold wedding bands don’t look boring and flaunt a traditional look. Another trend that is catching up among men is two-tone wedding band.

  • For grooms who want to sport something flashy

Wedding bands with gemstones are gaining popularity among most men. Band with studded rubies or sapphires make the ring stand out on the D-day. A diamond wedding ring for men not only adds a special meaning to the wedding but also reflects the eternal aspect of the relationship between the bride and the groom.

  • For men who love contemporary style

For contemporary style lovers, patterned wedding band is the ideal choice. Patterned ring styles are available in gold and other metals.

To-be grooms, whatever your style is, you’re bound to like one of these great-looking men's wedding bands.
